On a journey to bring the finest teas of the world to our customers, TWG Tea commissioned award-winning documentary filmmaker and journalist Fraser Morton and wildlife photographer Eszter Papp to document the voyage of our tea tasters across the four corners of the world. The crew share their thoughts after their first stop in Darjeeling, India…

Take us back in a second to the Darjeeling foothills of the Himalayas. We’ve travelled to many regions of the world, but this is up there with the most memorable for nature escapism.

The journey is a bumpy one that started out speeding along dusty highways that soon turned to winding roads, then dirt tracks that funnelled deep into the mountains, leading higher into the mist, clouds and biting cold. We passed villages clinging at impossible angles to cliff-sides, dense jungle, gangs of monkeys, broken down trucks struggling to make it up steep roads.

Each mile revealed more majestic views down into the valley. We passed by streams originating as the source of Himalayan freshwater that flowed downstream, eventually emptying out into the mighty Ganges River many miles away.

The whole area feels like some sort of fictional place out of a story. It’s no wonder why so many great travel writers have penned their best work here over the past century. We passed through a small town, that we couldn’t help but wonder how it could possibly be built all the way up here. Night descended and locals passed by in brightly coloured ponchos and scarves. We soaked in the sights of this new place. There’s a blend of Indian-Nepalese culture, temples, monasteries, Buddhism — and, of course — tea.

Tourism and tea are cornerstones of the local economy. The landscapes and natural elements provide a perfect climate for optimal tea farming — and that’s what drew the original tea entrepreneurs to the region back in the 1800s. It’s a place to be in nature, savour views and the tea, which is some of the best in the world. Plantation owner Antrikish and the whole team view their farming as a craft and take pride in their organic handpicked farming processes. We arrived at the plantation as strangers and we left as friends. Take us back in a second.
